Frederick Lane is an author, expert witness, and professional speaker on the legal and cultural implications of emerging technology. A graduate of Amherst College and Boston College Law School, Lane has worked as a freelance writer and journalist for the last 14 years, and is a frequent contributor of articles on technology and privacy issues to Newsfactor.com. He is the author of four trade non-fiction books:
- The Court and the Cross: The Religious Right’s Crusade to Reshape the Supreme Court (Beacon Press 2008);
- The Decency Wars: The Campaign to Cleanse American Culture (Prometheus Books 2006);
- The Naked Employee: How Technology Is Compromising Workplace Privacy (Amacom 2003); and
- Obscene Profits: The Entrepreneurs of Pornography in the Cyber Age (Routledge 2000).
In addition to his daily technology articles, Lane has written numerous magazine articles on topics ranging from workplace privacy to the growth of patent litigation to the impact of the Internet on American sexuality.
On August 23, August 2006, Lane appeared on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to discuss The Decency Wars. He has also appeared on a variety of other national television programs, including ABC’s “Good Morning America Weekend,” NBC’s “Weekend Today,” ABC’s “Nightline,” CBS’s “60 Minutes,” and assorted BBC documentaries. Lane has been interviewed by numerous radio shows, magazines, and newspapers around the world on topics relating to his books.
Lane is an experienced public speaker who frequently appears before college, university, and professional audiences to lecture on Internet technology, workplace and personal privacy, computer forensics, and censorship issues. He is represented by the Jodi R. Solomon Speakers Bureau in Boston, MA and Vermont Voices in Essex Junction, Vermont. Lane has recently lectured on issues of MySpace and campus privacy at Dickinson College; Elizabethtown College; Chadron State College; Vanderbilt University, Drake University, Columbia Basin College, and St. Norbert College. He was a keynote speaker at HR Privacy 2004 in Washington, D.C. (26-27 May 2004), and appeared as a featured speaker at the inaugural Inbox Email Technology Conference in San Francisco, CA (16-18 June 2004).
In his capacity as an expert witness, Lane has worked on pornography and obscenity-related litigation for a variety of clients, including the U.S. Dept. of Justice, the City of Charlotte, N.C., assorted businesses, and individual defendants.
Lane lives in Burlington, Vermont with his partner, Dr. Amy Werbel, and four boys. Since October 2001, he has served on the Burlington School Board, chairs the Board’s Finance subcommittee, and serves as Clerk of the Board. He is also a member of the Board of Directors for Vermont Community Access Media, one of the region’s three public access television stations.
