ATTORNEY AND AUTHOR PROVIDES EXPERT INSIGHT ON THE LEGAL IMPLICATIONS OF REP. ANTHONY WEINER’S RECENT SEXT MESSAGES AND HIGHLIGHTS THE NEED FOR ‘CYBERETHICS’ LESSON FOR YOUTH AND ADULTS

As House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi calls for an ethics investigation into Representative Anthony Weiner’s (D-NY) recent admission that he sent lewd messages to multiple women, including a 21-year-old, several important questions arise: What are the legal implications of his actions? Just how big a problem has sexting become?

Frederick Lane, attorney, computer forensics expert, former Burlington (VT) School Board president and the author of the soon-to-be-released Cybertraps for the Young is one of the nation’s leading legal experts on sexting and sextortion. Lane says that the rise of social media and camera technology has made sexting a far bigger problem than once imagined, especially among youth.

In September 2009, the Associated Press and MTV combined on a study that interviewed roughly 1, 200 people between the ages of fourteen and twenty-four. Among the significant results:

  • 24 percent of teens aged fourteen to nineteen said they’d been involved in some form of naked sexting, either as a sender or receiver
  • Almost a third (29 percent) of children sent sexts to people they knew online
  • 24 percent sent sexts to people they wanted to date or “hook up” with

In an interview, Lane can discuss:

  • Potential criminal charges Weiner could face
  • Why lewd online exchanges have become increasingly common
  • How computer forensics could affect a potential congressional ethics investigation
  • How children view and react to unethical behavior by public officials, athletes, celebrities, and other role models
  • How parents can use the Weiner incident as a “teachable moment,” illustrating the risks of sexting to their children
